WIGSTON ACADEMIES TRUST: CURRICULUM INTENT
We want our students to leave with the following skills and knowledge:
1. To be empowered learners
2. To be able to look after themselves and others
3. To know how to live in and contribute to the modern world
4. To show confidence and be prepared for the next stage in their lives
1. Empowered Learners:
The intent of this area is to make sure that our students leave having learned and acquired more skills and having developed as people. Most importantly, this area means that they will be ready, able and willing to learn outside college and school and for the rest of their lives. In order to do this they will need the following knowledge and skills:
• Memory skills
• Functional skills (literacy, numeracy and digital)
• Independence
• Curiosity
• Problem solving skills
• Creativity
• Engagement
• Assessment skills
• Resilience
• The knowledge to make links between concepts and ideas
• The ability to learn and adapt through failure
2. Ability to look after themselves and others:
Students need to be able to leave our college able to cope with life’s challenges but also aware of other people with whom they share the world. In order to do this they will need the following knowledge and skills:
• Communication
• Co-operation
• Ambition
• Skills to keep mentally healthy
• Skills to keep physically healthy
• High self-esteem
• Personal safety skills
• Thoughtfulness and empathy
• Knowledge of how to value themselves and others
3. Knowing how to live in and contribute to the modern world:
Life cannot be led in isolation and understanding the power and value of communities is essential to a successful life. To take part in active life as a global citizen, our students will need the following knowledge and skills:
• Awareness of cultural diversity
• Tolerance
• Respect
• Political literacy
• Cultural capital
4. Showing confidence and being prepared for the next stage in their lives:
After keeping their young people safe, the most important thing a college will do is prepare students for what comes after college. If our students are to be higher education and work ready, they will need the following knowledge and skills:
• Employability skills
• Financial literacy
• Being informed decision makers
• Appropriately qualified
• Character
• Reflectiveness
